He started the business with a capital of INR 30 lakhs (3 million rupees) borrowed from family and friends. Over the years, he transformed the company into one of India's leading financial institutions.

Under Uday Kotak's leadership, Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd. diversified its services and eventually received a banking license from the Reserve Bank of India in 2003. The institution was then renamed Kotak Mahindra Bank, becoming a full-fledged commercial bank. Today, Kotak Mahindra Bank is one of India's top private sector banks with a wide range of financial services.
