Biography of Florence Nightingale: Florence Nightingale was a British nurse, statistician, and social reformer who is considered the founder of modern nursing. She was born on May 12, 1820 in Florence, Italy, to a wealthy family. She became interested in nursing at a young age and later trained as a nurse in Germany. During the Crimean War, she was put in charge of nursing British and allied soldiers in Turkey. Her night rounds caring for the wounded established her image as the “Lady with the Lamp”. After the war, she returned to England and continued her work in nursing and public health. She was instrumental in establishing the first professional training school for nurses, the Nightingale Training School, at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London 1. She also wrote extensively on health care reform and was a pioneer in the use of statistical analysis in health care. She died on August 13, 1910 in London, England, at the age of 90.
