Krishnan was born on 23 September 1911 in the small village of Rapal in Thrissur district, India. He received his early education from local schools. He then did his BA Honors from St. Joseph's College Tiruchirappalli. He got the rank in 1933 for this. In 1941, he received his PhD from Cambridge University.
