Ed Roberts, whose full name was Edward Verne Roberts, was an American disability rights activist and the pioneering advocate for people with disabilities, especially those with severe physical disabilities. He is often referred to as the "Father of the Independent Living Movement."

Early Life and Disability of Ed Roberts:

Ed Roberts was born on January 23, 1939, in San Francisco, California. In 1953, at the age of 14, he contracted polio, which left him paralyzed from the neck down, requiring him to use a wheelchair for mobility and dependent on a ventilator to breathe.

Educational Struggles and Advocacy of Ed Roberts:

Roberts faced discrimination and resistance when he sought admission to the University of California, Berkeley, due to his severe disability. Despite initial challenges, he was admitted in 1962, becoming the first severely disabled student to attend the university. Roberts's presence on campus and his advocacy efforts inspired the establishment of the Physically Disabled Students Program, a comprehensive support system that enabled students with disabilities to attend the university.

Independent Living Movement of Ed Roberts:

In 1972, Ed Roberts co-founded the Center for Independent Living (CIL) in Berkeley, California. CIL was one of the first organizations to promote the concept of independent living for people with disabilities. The movement aimed to empower individuals with disabilities to live independently, make their own choices, and actively participate in society.
