Biography of Syed Kirmani

Syed Kirmani is a former Indian cricketer who was born on December 29, 1949, in Madras, British India (now Chennai, India). He was a wicket-keeper batsman and is widely regarded as one of the best wicket-keepers India has ever produced. Kirmani represented the Indian cricket team in both Test and One Day International (ODI) formats during his career.

Early Life - Career - Post Retirement of Syed Kirmani

Early Career:

Syed Kirmani made his Test debut for India against New Zealand on December 17, 1976. He quickly established himself as India's first-choice wicket-keeper due to his excellent glovework and safe hands behind the stumps.

- Kirmani played 88 Test matches for India, scoring 2759 runs, and taking 198 catches and 38 stumpings. He was an integral part of the Indian team during the late 1970s and 1980s.
- In One Day Internationals, he played 49 matches and scored 484 runs. He also affected 27 catches and 27 stumpings in ODIs.

Achievements of Syed Kirmani:

- One of Kirmani's most memorable performances came in the 1983 Cricket World Cup final against the West Indies, where he scored a crucial 14 runs and took a stunning catch to dismiss Vivian Richards.
- He was a part of the Indian team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup under the captaincy of Kapil Dev.

Kirmani was awarded the Best Wicketkeeper Award for the 1983 World Cup. His best catch was the catch of Fauds Bashuj, which he took against West Indies in the final match. Kirmani was a responsible and dependable batsman of the lower order. He shared a 126-run partnership with Kapil Dev for the ninth wicket against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

Syed Kirmani career in 1984-1986

Kirmani scored his second century in Mumbai. He scored 102 runs and also set the Indian record of 235 runs for the 7th wicket with Ravi Shastri. Kirmani was not kept in the team to replace Sadanand Vishwanath in the team in the same series in Chennai.

Syed Kirmani Post-Retirement:

After retiring from international cricket, Kirmani has been involved in coaching and commentary. He has served as the chairman of the national selection committee and has also been a part of various cricket-related activities in India.

Syed Kirmani is remembered not only for his exceptional skills as a wicket-keeper but also for his contributions to India's cricketing history, especially during the victorious 1983 World Cup campaign.
