It falls on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Ashwin, usually two days before Diwali, the festival of lights. On Dhanteras, people perform various customs and rituals, and there are specific items associated with the day. 

Here are five things traditionally associated with Dhanteras:

1. Buying Gold or Silver:

One of the most popular customs on Dhanteras is buying gold or silver items. It is believed to bring prosperity and good luck. People purchase jewelry, coins, or utensils made of gold or silver on this day.

2. Cleaning and Decorating Homes:

Dhanteras is also a day for cleaning and decorating homes. People clean their houses thoroughly and decorate them with colorful rangoli (decorative designs made on the floor), flowers, and diyas (oil lamps) to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

3. Lighting Diyas and Lamps:

Lighting diyas and lamps is an essential part of Dhanteras celebrations. It is believed that the light of diyas removes darkness and ignorance, symbolizing the presence of positive energy and enlightenment.

4. Offering Prayers:

Devotees offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and healing, seeking their blessings for wealth, health, and overall well-being. Special puja (prayer rituals) are conducted in homes and temples.

5. Buying Kitchen Utensils:

In addition to gold and silver items, people also buy new kitchen utensils on Dhanteras. It is considered auspicious to make new purchases, especially related to household items, on this day.

These customs and rituals associated with Dhanteras are believed to bring prosperity, happiness, and good fortune to individuals and their families.
