World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

WMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, promotes international cooperation on atmospheric science, hydrology, climatology and geophysics. WMO originated from the International Meteorological Organization for the exchange of weather data and research. During the 19४७ World Meteorological Conference, proposals to improve the status and structure of IMO were proposed. The Convention came into force in 1950 after which WMO began its operations as an intergovernmental organization within the United Nations.

The IMO was the first organization established for the purpose of exchanging weather information between countries. In 1951, IMO was replaced by the World Meteorological Organization.
