तारत्व तो ध्वनि का वह गुण है जिसके आधार पर कोई ध्वनि कान को मोटी ( नीचे तारत्व के ) की अथवा बारीक (उच्च तारत्व की )  प्रतीत होती है इस प्रकार तारत्व ध्वनि के बारीक अथवा मोटी होने की माप है ध्वनि की आवृत्ति ध्वनि श्रोत द्वारा प्रति सेकंड किए गए कंपनो की संख्या होती है जिसे नापा जा सकता है जबकि ध्वनि तारत्व को केवल दो ध्वनियों में अंतर के रूप में अनुभव किया जा सकता है यद्यपि तारत्व ध्वनि की आवृत्ति पर निर्भर करता है फिर भी यह आवृत्ति से भिन्न है।
