Shivaji successor | Sambhaji - Birth - Reign - Challenges - Capture and Execution - Shivaji's successor and Ruler of the Maratha Empire

Shivaji's successor

Shivaji, also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India during the 17th century. After his death, his son, Sambhaji, succeeded him as the ruler of the Maratha Empire.

Sambhaji:

Birth: Sambhaji, the eldest son of Shivaji and his first wife, Saibai, was born in 1657.

Reign: Sambhaji became the second Chhatrapati (emperor) of the Maratha Empire after the death of his father Shivaji in 1680.

Challenges: Sambhaji faced several challenges during his reign, including conflicts with the Mughal Empire under Aurangzeb, who aimed to annex the Maratha territories.

Capture and Execution: Unfortunately, Sambhaji's reign was short-lived. In 1689, he was captured by the Mughals and subjected to severe torture and execution.

After Sambhaji's capture and execution, his younger brother, Rajaram, took over the Maratha Empire as the next Chhatrapati. Rajaram continued the resistance against the Mughals and played a significant role in preserving and expanding the Maratha power in the Deccan region. His reign was marked by a series of battles and diplomatic efforts against the Mughals.

Rajaram's wife, Tarabai, also played a crucial role in Maratha politics after his death. She acted as the regent for her son, Shivaji II, during his minority, ensuring the continuity of the Maratha rule.

The legacy of Shivaji continued through his successors, with each generation contributing to the expansion and stability of the Maratha Empire in different ways.
