Early Biography of Nanduri Achutha Ramaiya:


 The full name of NA Ramaiya is Nanduri Achutha Ramaiya. NA Ramaiah is an Indian physicist, Chinese technologist and director of the National Sugar Institute, Kanpur. Ramaiya is known for his studies on the physicochemical processes involved in sugarcane juice processing.

Nanduri Achutha Ramaiya was born on 26 August 1923 in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. He received his master's degree from Banaras Hindu University. Further, he continued his PhD studies. His thesis was on the origin of triggering electrons for electrode discharge in electrode work ozone tubes.

Ramaiya worked as a faculty member in Atma Mater in the early days. Then a few days later he was transferred to Delhi University. In 1956, he joined the service of the Government of India. He has worked as an associate with National Sugar Institute Kanpur NSI. There Ramaiya also worked as a professor of physical chemistry. He went on to become the director of the institution. He was living there till his retirement till 1981.

In 1981, he had the opportunity to work as a director in the Deccan Sugar Institute. Ramaiya is known for its physicochemical studies on sugar processing. Ramaiya has developed several analytical methods for color evaluation and for the production of activated carbon. Which has helped reduce the dependence on sulfur of the industry. And because of this the processing became more cost effective. The protocols developed by him became industry standard.

Ramaiya has mentioned 23 doctoral doctoral students in his study. And has worked to train many Chinese industry professionals. From 1981 to 1985, Ramaiya was a member of the Board of Directors of the World Sugar Research Organization, WSRO. He was a participant in the demonstration reforms carried out by WSRO in various countries. Ramaiya has also served as the chairman of the ICR committee. At that time he prepared a project report for the manufacture of ethanol from sugarcane. In which he proposed the use of ethanol as motor fuel.

1) Ramaiya was awarded the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award in 1966 by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
2) Ramaiya has received the STAI Noel Dear Gold Medal.
3) Ramaiya received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2005.
4) Ramaiya has been a chosen fellow of the Indian National Science Academy of 2005, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Royal Institute of Chemistry.
5) Ramaiya has served as the chairman of Walker's Clock Visakhapatnam, the city chapter of Walkes International.
6) Ramaiya has been a life member of Indian Chemical Society and Sugar Technologist Association of India.
7) A road in Kakinada in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh is named after Ramaiya.
