Biography of Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde
Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde is the 47th Chief Justice of India (CJI). The outgoing Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had on October 18 recommended Justice Bobde's appointment as Chief Justice. As per the seniority order policy, former Chief Justice Gogoi sent his name to the Central Government as his successor.
President Ram Nath Kovind was signed on orders to appoint Yamurti Bobde to the post of CJI. Chief Justice Bobde comes from a family of lawyers from Maharashtra and his father Arvind Srinivas Bobde was also a famous lawyer. Justice Bobde will hold the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for 17 months and will retire on 23 April 2021.
Birth and education of Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde: Sharad Arvind Bobde was born on 24 April 1956 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He graduated from Nagpur University in Arts and Law. In the year 1978, he enrolled himself as an advocate in the Maharashtra Bar Council.
Justice Bobde, who served for 21 years in the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, became a senior advocate in the year 1998. Justice Bobde was sworn in as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 29 March 2000. On 16 October 2012, he became the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. On 12 April 2013, he was promoted as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The Ayodhya verdict has been included: Justice Bobde was also on the 5-judge bench to intervene in the dispute that had been going on since 1950 by giving a decision on the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi dispute. In August 2017, a 9-judge bench headed by the then CJI JS Khehar ruled unanimously the right to privacy to be a constitutionally protected fundamental right in India. This bench also included Justice Bobde.
A big decision was pronounced on BCCI by Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde: Recently a 2-member bench headed by Justice Bobde directed the Committee of Administrators headed by former Comptroller and Accountant General Vinod Rai to look into the administration of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Clean chit given by Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde to former CJI Gogoi: A 3-member committee of the Supreme Court under the chairmanship of Justice Bobde gave a clean chit to former CJI Gogoi for sexual harassment charges leveled against him by a former court judge. The committee also included Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Indu Malhotra. Justice Bobde was one of the 3-member bench in 2015 which clarified that no citizen of India can be denied basic services and government services in the absence of an Aadhaar number.
Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde very fond of riding: Justice Bobde is very fond of bike riding. His favorite bike is the Bullet of the Royal Enfield Company. They are often seen driving it on their own. Earlier this year, he was doing a test drive of a Harley Davidson bike when the bike suddenly slipped and he was an accident. He loves walking in the jungle. Apart from this, they are fond of dogs. In their spare time they like to read books. Justice Bobde lives at home with great simplicity and his simplicity is seen everywhere.
