Early Biography of Gopal Samudram Narayan Ramachandran:

        Ramachandran was born on 8 October 1922 in a Tamil Brahmin family in the city of Ernakulam, Kerala, India. He completed his BSc Honors in Physics in 1939 from St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirapalli. He joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1942.

        Realizing his interest in physics, he received his degree in Physics from Madras University in 1942 with his thesis from Bangalore. Later he obtained his degree in DIS in 1947. Here he made X ray coking mirrors for the X ray microscope.

        Ramachandran was devastated by the death of his wife Rajalakshmi in 1998 and health was slowly declining. During the last few years of his life, he suffered a stroke and was affected by Parkigus disease. Ramachandran died in 2001 at the age of 78 and he left behind a legacy of scientific discovery.

        GN Ramachandran was an Indian physicist. Who were known for their work. This led to Ramachandran's plot to explain peptide structure. He was the first person to propose a triple helical model for collagen structure. Later he made many major contributions in biology and physics.

        As a result of crystal topography, the field is used in large scale chapters with crystal growth and solid state reactivity. In 1952 he went to Madras University as Professor and Head of Physics Department where he continued his work on Crystal Physics.

        Professor Ramachandran was the favorite patriarch of Madras University and famous scientist and medical scientist Sir Arcot Lakshmanaswamy Mudaliar. In 1971, he published his research in PNAS. Ramachandran became the founder member of Vishwa Cultural Council in 1981.

Awards and honors to Gopal Samudram Narayan Ramachandran :

1) He was awarded the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award for Physics in India in 1961.
2) He is included in the Fellowship of Royal Society of London.
3) In 1999, he was awarded the Ewald Prize for outstanding contribution to crystallography.
4) Each year CSIR confers the GN Ramachandran Gold Medal for Excellence in Biological Sciences and Technology for his work in Biological Sciences and Technology.
