Araki - the city of caves and temples

Araki is a major tourist destination located in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. This small town in this district offers people the opportunity to visit some of the most attractive tourist destinations in the region. Historically, the city was the capital of the ancient hill state of Baghal, founded by King Ajayadeva during 1660–1665. Situated 52 km from Shimla, Araki still has a few monuments which display the royal heritage of the erstwhile kings.

There are many temples in Araki, which attract tourists from all parts of the country. Prominent among them are Luturu Mahadev Temple, Durga Temple and Shakhani Mahadev Temple. Located 4 kilometers from Araki, the Luturu Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple, known as Shakti Peetha, was built in 1621 by the king of Baghal. Travelers visiting Araki can also see the Durga Temple, which is known for its peak style of architecture. On the other hand, the Shakhani Mahadev Temple, being situated at a height, offers a panoramic view of the surroundings.

 Arki Fort (fort) and Arki Palace (palace) which represent the legacy of the progressive Baghal Empire are notable sites in this city. The fort was built by Rana Prithvi Singh between 1695 and 1700 and this fort represents a fusion between the styles of Rajput and Mughal architecture. It offers tourists the opportunity to see wall paintings in the hill style depicting the lifestyle of the people living in the mountainous areas. Arki Mahal, built in the 18th century by Rana Prithvi Singh, is located in the Western Himalayas and displays the Kalam style of architecture. Bhakhalag, Diwan-i-Khas, Kunihar and Lakshminarayana temples are some of the major tourist places in Araki. Tourists can reach the place by various modes of transport such as roads, airways and rail. Tourists can visit here at any time of the year as the climate is pleasant in all seasons.
