Early Life:
Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire and is now the capital of North Macedonia. At the age of 18, she left home to join the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India.
Mother Teresa's Missionary Work in India:
In 1929, Mother Teresa arrived in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, where she taught at St. Mary's High School and later served as the school's principal. While on a train journey to Darjeeling in 1946, she received what she described as a "call within a call" from Jesus to serve the poorest of the poor.
In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation.
