She was born to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit and has two sisters, Rupa and Bharati. Madhuri made her acting debut in Bollywood with the film "Abodh" (1984), but it was her role in "Tezaab" (1988) alongside Anil Kapoor that catapulted her to stardom. Her dance performance in the song "Ek Do Teen" from the same film became immensely popular and established her as the dancing diva of Indian cinema.
