She was born on April 22, 1952, in Penal, Trinidad and Tobago. Kamla Persad-Bissessar is the leader of the United National Congress (UNC), a major political party in Trinidad and Tobago.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar was raised in a humble background. She pursued her education with determination and earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies. Later, she obtained a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago.

After completing her legal education, Kamla Persad-Bissessar practiced law as a barrister and attorney. She became involved in politics and was elected to the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago for the first time in 1995, representing the Siparia constituency.
