Inder Kumar Gujral (4 December 1919 – 30 November 2012) was an Indian politician who served as the 12th Prime Minister of India. He held office from April 1997 to March 1998. Gujral was a prominent leader in the Indian National Congress party before later joining other political parties, including the Janata Dal and eventually forming his own party, the Janata Dal (Secular).

I.K. Gujral was born in Jhelum (now in Pakistan) in a Punjabi Sikh family. His family moved to India after the partition in 1947. Gujral graduated from Hailey College of Commerce, Lahore, and later attended the D.A.V. College in Lahore, where he was associated with the Akali Dal, a Sikh political party.
