Biography of Inder Kumar Gujral

Inder Kumar Gujral (4 December 1919 – 30 November 2012) was an Indian politician who served as the 12th Prime Minister of India. He held office from April 1997 to March 1998. Gujral was a prominent leader in the Indian National Congress party before later joining other political parties, including the Janata Dal and eventually forming his own party, the Janata Dal (Secular).

Early Life and Education of Inder Kumar Gujral:

I.K. Gujral was born in Jhelum (now in Pakistan) in a Punjabi Sikh family. His family moved to India after the partition in 1947. Gujral graduated from Hailey College of Commerce, Lahore, and later attended the D.A.V. College in Lahore, where he was associated with the Akali Dal, a Sikh political party.

Political Career of Inder Kumar Gujral:

Gujral started his political career as a member of the Communist Party of India but later joined the Indian National Congress. He served in various capacities within the Congress Party and was appointed as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the government led by Indira Gandhi.

He later joined the Janata Dal, a coalition of opposition parties, and held several ministerial positions. He became the Minister of External Affairs in the government of Prime Minister V.P. Singh.

Inder Kumar Gujral Tenure as Prime Minister:

Gujral became the Prime Minister of India in April 1997, leading a coalition government known as the United Front. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by a focus on improving relations with neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan. His government advocated the "Gujral Doctrine," a foreign policy approach emphasizing goodwill and non-reciprocity in India's relations with its smaller neighbors.

After his tenure as Prime Minister, Gujral continued to be active in politics and held various positions in the government. He was also a respected author, diplomat, and thinker on international relations.

Inder Kumar Gujral passed away on 30 November 2012 at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of diplomatic initiatives and contributions to Indian politics. He is remembered for his emphasis on peaceful coexistence and friendly relations with India's neighbors during his time as Prime Minister.
