AMRUT Scheme

The Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) Scheme is a flagship initiative of the Government of India launched in June 2015. The scheme is aimed at transforming urban areas by ensuring robust infrastructure and essential services, especially in cities and towns that are significant centers of economic activities.

What is AMRUT scheme

Key Objectives of the AMRUT Scheme:

1. Infrastructure Development: AMRUT focuses on ensuring basic infrastructure services such as water supply, sewerage, stormwater drains, transportation, and development of green spaces and parks. The goal is to provide these services in an efficient, equitable, and sustainable manner.

2. Water Supply: The scheme aims to provide piped water supply to households, ensuring 24x7 water supply in select areas. This includes measures to reduce water losses and improve water distribution systems.

3. Sewerage and Septage Management: AMRUT focuses on constructing sewerage systems and encouraging safe disposal of septage and sewage. This is crucial for improving sanitation and reducing water pollution.

4. Solid Waste Management: The scheme promotes effective solid waste management practices, including waste segregation at the source, collection, transportation, processing, and disposal of solid waste. This helps in keeping cities clean and environmentally sustainable.

5. Urban Transport: AMRUT supports the development of public transportation systems, pedestrian pathways, and non-motorized transport infrastructure. This helps in reducing traffic congestion and promoting environmentally friendly modes of transport.

6. Green Spaces and Parks: The scheme emphasizes the development of parks, playgrounds, and green spaces. These areas contribute to the overall well-being of urban residents and enhance the aesthetic appeal of cities.

7. Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening: AMRUT focuses on building the capacity of urban local bodies (ULBs) to plan, execute, and manage urban projects effectively. It also aims at strengthening municipal governance and financial sustainability.

8. Community Participation: The scheme encourages the active participation of communities and stakeholders in the planning and implementation of urban projects. Public participation is essential for the success and sustainability of urban development initiatives.

AMRUT is implemented in mission mode, with a focus on project-based planning and execution. The scheme aims to create inclusive, safe, and sustainable urban spaces that improve the overall quality of life for residents. By providing essential urban services and infrastructure, AMRUT contributes significantly to the development of Indian cities and towns.
