Biography of Nirmal Jit Singh
Nirmal Jit Singh
Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, PVC (17 July 1944 - 14 December 1971) was an officer of the Indian Air Force. In recognition of his only defense of the Srinagar Air Base against PAF's air strikes during the Indo-Pak war of 1971, he was posthumously awarded Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration.

Flying Officer Nirmal jit Singh Sekhon was born on July 17, 1943 in Roorka village of Ludhiana, Punjab. A few months after his marriage, Nirmal jit Singh dedicated himself to the country. On December 14, 1971, when six Pakistani sabar jets were attacked by Srinagar Airfield, Officer Nirmaljit Singh was deployed there with 18 net squadron while retaining the command of the security unit.

Faced with bravery of enemy F-86 sabar jets, they demolished two Saabar jets. They continued to pursue enemies and release their sixes. After the explosion of the collapse of the second Saber Jet, Sekhon sent a message to his fellow Flight Lieutenant Bhumman Singh that maybe even my plane has now come to the target, now you have taken the front. After giving this message, they were martyred.

Nirmal Jit Singh in India Pakistan war

On December 14, 1971, Air Force Flying Officer Nirmal jit Singh Sekhon was serving in Srinagar. The responsibility of protecting the Kashmir valley from the attacks of Pakistani Air Force was on the shoulders of the Sikhs and their companions. Suddenly the news came that six Pakistani fighter jets have crossed the border. Before the Indian air defense could have been activated, Pakistani aircraft had come on the head. In some way, a senior junior passenger was able to fly his plane with the airstrip that the enemy planes started bombing the airstrip. Sekhons still made the mind of the enemy to take the iron and began to try to blow up their plane. Their falling bombs, and the damaged windshield had become a major problem. Surprised to everyone, somehow their net air came in the air.

Now assess the challenge before Sekhon. They were alone in front of six enemy planes.

The enemy's aircraft were the famous Saber (Saber), which was far better than the gun and the ability to attack. Additional support could not be expected because the airstrip was damaged. But if the Sekhons were withdrawn from the enemy's path then no one could stop the enemy from doing it arbitrarily.

The Sekhon did what they would immortal in history. They challenged the enemy and broke on him like lightning. A plane of the enemy devoted fire, and focused on the other plane. The Sekhon, flying behind the other enemy, targeted him. Pakistani fighters were unaware of this unexpected attack

Gallantry of Nirmal Jit Singh

On December 14, 1971, six Saabar jets of Pakistan were attacked by Srinagar Airfield. While taking command of the security unit, Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh was deployed there with 18 Net Squadron. Enemy F-86 Saber came with Jet Wemons. At that time, Flying Lieutenant Swimming with Nirmal jit was also present. There was a lot of haze in the airfield. At 8 o'clock in the morning, there was a warning that the enemy was on the attack. Nirmal Singh and Ghumman promptly prompted their flight and decided to fly north without ten seconds after waiting for the reply. At exactly 8 o'clock in 4 minutes, the two air forces were in the sky to face the enemy. At that time, the enemy's first F-86 Saber was preparing to dive on the air jet field. Before the airfield, the ship of Swiman left the run. After that, as soon as Nirmaljit Singh's nets blown away, a bomb hit him right behind him. Swamman was chasing himself a Saber Jet at that time. Sekhon faced two Saber jets in the air, one of these ships was the same, who had bombed Airfilts. After the bomb fell, the contact with the Combat Air petrol from the airfield was broken by sekhakhs and swumman. The whole airfield was filled with smoke and dust, which was the result of the bomb blast. It was difficult to see because of all this. Then Flight Command Squadron Leader Pathania found that there were two airplanes in the preparation of the encounter.
