Naveen Patnaik is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of the Indian state of Odisha. He is the founder and leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), a regional political party in Odisha. Naveen Patnaik has been serving as the Chief Minister since 2000, making him one of the longest-serving chief ministers in the history of India.

Early Life of Naveen Patnaik:

Naveen Patnaik was born on October 16, 1946, in Cuttack, Odisha, to Biju Patnaik, a prominent politician and the former Chief Minister of Odisha. His mother, Gyan Patnaik, was an accomplished writer.


Naveen Patnaik spent much of his early life abroad, as he accompanied his father, Biju Patnaik, who was actively involved in international affairs. He received his education in the United States and the United Kingdom, studying at the Welham Boys' School in Dehradun, The Doon School, and the University of Delhi. He later attended the University of Oxford.

Naveen Patnaik's Career Before Politics:

Before entering politics, Naveen Patnaik had a career in business and writing. He worked in Delhi and then in the United States, where he managed a travel agency and wrote for several publications. His life took a significant turn with the death of his father, Biju Patnaik, in 1997.

Entry into Politics:

Naveen Patnaik entered politics after the death of his father and the subsequent dissolution of the Janata Dal. In 1997, he founded the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), named after his father Biju Patnaik. The party aimed to champion the cause of the people of Odisha and address issues related to regional development.

Naveen Patnaik's Chief Ministership:

In 2000, Naveen Patnaik took a plunge into state politics and became the Chief Minister of Odisha. Despite being a novice in electoral politics, he won the assembly by-election from the Hinjili constituency. Under his leadership, the BJD formed an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) initially and later maintained a regional focus.


Naveen Patnaik's tenure as Chief Minister has been marked by a focus on welfare programs, disaster management, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure development in Odisha.
