Karnam Malleswari, born on June 1, 1975, in Voosavanipeta, Andhra Pradesh, India, is a former Indian weightlifter and one of the country's most accomplished athletes. She made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting.

Early Life:

Malleswari was born into a family with a strong sports background. Her father, Karnam Manohar, was a national-level weightlifter. Inspired by her father, she started training in weightlifting at a young age.

Weightlifting Career:

Karnam Malleswari competed in the 69 kg weight category. She won multiple medals at the Asian Weightlifting Championships and the World Weightlifting Championships during her career. Her most significant achievement came at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Malleswari's Olympic Success:

In the 2000 Summer Olympics, held in Sydney, Australia, Malleswari lifted a total of 240 kg (110 kg in snatch and 130 kg in clean and jerk). This performance earned her a bronze medal, making her the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting. Her historic achievement brought her widespread recognition and acclaim in India.



Awards and Honors to Karnam Malleswari:

Karnam Malleswari was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India's highest sporting honor, in 1995. She was also honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in 1999.

Post-Retirement:

After retiring from competitive weightlifting, Malleswari has been involved in coaching and sports administration. She has continued to contribute to the development of weightlifting in India.
