Biography of Ardeshir Burjorji Tarapore:

Ardeshir Burjorji Tarapore, often known as Adi Tarapore, was an Indian military officer who served as a Brigadier in the Indian Army. He is particularly remembered for his valiant leadership during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, where he played a crucial role in the Battle of Chawinda. Born on August 18, 1924, in Mumbai, India, Tarapore earned accolades for his bravery and strategic acumen.

Early Life and Education of Ardeshir Burjorji Tarapore:

Ardeshir Burjorji Tarapore was born into a Parsi family in Mumbai. He received his education at Bishop's School in Pune and later attended the Military Academy in Dehradun.

Military Career:

Adi Tarapore was commissioned into the Poona Horse (17 Horse), an armored regiment of the Indian Army. He quickly rose through the ranks and became known for his leadership skills and tactical acumen.

Ardeshir Burjorji Tarapore in Indo-Pakistani War of 1965:

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Adi Tarapore played a pivotal role in the Battle of Chawinda, one of the largest tank battles since World War II. The battle took place in the Sialkot sector and was a critical engagement between Indian and Pakistani forces.


Tarapore, then a Lieutenant Colonel, led the 17 Horse regiment with great distinction. Despite being outnumbered and facing intense Pakistani resistance, Tarapore displayed exceptional courage and strategic thinking. He personally led his troops in several daring tank attacks, inflicting heavy losses on the Pakistani forces.

Tragically, on September 16, 1965, during a fierce engagement, Adi Tarapore's tank was hit, and he suffered fatal injuries. He succumbed to his injuries, but his gallantry and leadership had left an indelible mark on the military history of India.

Legacy:

Brigadier Ardeshir Burjorji Tarapore posthumously received the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration for valor, for his exceptional leadership and bravery during the Battle of Chawinda. The citation for his Param Vir Chakra reads:

"Throughout, Lt. Col. Tarapore showed conspicuous gallantry, determination, and leadership of a high order."

The memory of Adi Tarapore's courage and sacrifice is honored by the Indian Army, and he remains a symbol of valor and leadership in the annals of India's military history. The Poona Horse regiment continues to commemorate his legacy, and his contribution is remembered with deep respect.
