History of Agra Fort:
Agra Fort, also known as the Red Fort of Agra, is a historic fort located in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India.

1. Foundation and Early Construction of Agra Fort:
The construction of Agra Fort was initiated by the third Mughal Emperor, Akbar the Great, in 1565. The fort was initially a brick structure and served as a military fortification.
2. Expansion by Akbar:
Akbar, who ruled from 1556 to 1605, extensively expanded and renovated the fort, turning it into a grand imperial city. The construction of the fort took several years and continued during the reigns of Akbar's successors.
3. Shah Jahan's Contributions:
Akbar's grandson, Shah Jahan, made significant contributions to Agra Fort. He rebuilt some of the existing structures with white marble and added new structures, including the famous Shah Burj and the Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque).
4. A Royal Residence:
Agra Fort served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638 when Shah Jahan shifted the capital to Delhi. The fort was not only a military stronghold but also a center of administration and an opulent palace.
5. Imprisonment of Shah Jahan:
Agra Fort gained historical significance during the reign of Shah Jahan. He was imprisoned in Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb for the last years of his life. It is believed that Shah Jahan spent his time in the Musamman Burj, a tower with a view of the Taj Mahal.

Agra Fort encompasses various structures, including the Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Jahangir's Palace, Khas Mahal, Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors), and more.
7. British Occupation:
In the 18th century, during the time of the East India Company, Agra Fort underwent some modifications. The British used it as a military garrison and made alterations to suit their needs.
8. Agra Fort as UNESCO World Heritage Site:
Agra Fort was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for its cultural significance and architectural brilliance. It is recognized as an outstanding example of Mughal military architecture.
9. Tourist Attraction of Agra Fort:
Today, Agra Fort is a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world. It is often visited in conjunction with the Taj Mahal, which is located a few kilometers away.
