Early Life and Education:
Raja Ramanna was born in Bangalore, India. He completed his education in physics and engineering, earning a Bachelor's degree in Science from Central College, Bangalore, and a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the Government Engineering College, Bangalore.
Ramanna's Contribution to India's Nuclear Program:
Ramanna joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai, where he worked under the guidance of renowned physicist Homi J. Bhabha. He was involved in India's first peaceful nuclear explosion, codenamed "Smiling Buddha," which took place on May 18, 1974, at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. This event made India a nuclear weapons state.
Professional Achievements:
Raja Ramanna served as the Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai from 1972 to 1978.
