Gulzar, born as Sampooran Singh Kalra in 1934 in what is now Pakistan, is an Indian lyricist, poet, author, screenwriter, and film director. He started his career as a lyricist in the 1963 film Bandini and worked with many music directors. He is also known for his sensitive and lyrical films as a director. He has received many awards, including the Padma Bhushan, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
