He later pursued his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Karnataka Arts College, Dharwad. He then obtained a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Magdalen College, Oxford.

Karnad made a remarkable entry into the world of theater with his critically acclaimed play "Yayati" in 1961.
