By the end of this year you will get to know how much your city is capable of living. The government is making this determination based on 77 criteria for all Indian cities, which will be known by the end of the year.

The Ministry of Rural Development has prepared a 'City Liability Index' based on 77 criteria under 15 categories. This will include criteria like air pollution level, availability of public transport, open space, hospital beds per 100,000 population, safety of citizens, health emergency, student-teacher ratio.

With an aim to increase competition among cities for cleanliness ranking, the central government will share these criteria with the state government next week. This is the first time that Indian cities are being ranked for livable cities. Till now only mega cities have been ranking.

A ministry official said, "We hope that all cities will send the details in 6 to 8 months." Its verification and audit will be conducted. Ranking will be done only after testing.

These criteria are directly related to quality of life. In the ideal condition, 8 to 10 minutes for health emergency response, 24.5 doctors for 10 thousand people, 2.5 beds for one thousand people has been considered.
