Raigad Fort | my experiences

Raigad Fort, Raigad district of Maharashtra is a hill fort. King Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj of Maratha empire built this fort and in 1674 he made this fort the capital of the Maratha empire.
Raigad fort located in the Sahyadri mountain range is 820 meters above sea level. This fort can be reached on foot by one side, through a steep climb, while on the other side the fort is surrounded by deep valleys.

History of Raigad Fort

This magnificent fort was built by Chandra Moore in 1030. At that time the fort was known as the "Fort of Ryari", but in 1656, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured this fort of Chandra More More from the dynasty of ancient Maurya dynasty.

Raigad fort was rebuilt by Shivaji Maharaj and expanded the fort of Riyari, and then renaming it as "Raigad", which means that the "King's Fort" was also considered as the capital of the Maratha Empire.

In 1698, Zulfiqar Khan and Aurangzeb occupied Raigad and named it "Islamgad".

In 1765, the fort became the target of an armed campaign by the British East India Company. Finally, after occupying the fort on May 9, 1818, the fort was robbed and destroyed by the British.

The magnificent fort has the Ganges Sagar Lake. There is also a famous wall, which is the Harkini bastion or Hirkani stronghold, which is built on a rock.

Within Raigad Fort there are many attractions like Nagarkha door, Meena Darwaja, Palkhi door, Tammak Tok. On the right side of the Palkhi door, there is a line of three dark, dark chambers, which was considered as the cinnamon of the fort.

How to reach Raigad fort?

Raigad Fort is located in Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra. There is no direct way to reach Raigad fort.

Rent a taxi from Raigad and reach the village Pachad near the nearest point of the fort. Once you reach the slopes. However, there is also the facility of Raigad Ropeway, with the help of air tramway, you can reach the fort in 4 minutes.

For those who are not fond of trekking, there is a ropeway to reach Raigad Fort. It has a height of 750 meters and climbed at a height of 400 meters and only takes about 4 minutes.

Best time to visit Raigad Fort 

The good time to visit Raigad Fort is between November and March, because the winter is not high and the weather is pleasant.

At present, except Shivaji's samadhi, its coronation site and Shiva temple are in ruins of all parts of Raigad fort.
