When a wave of light is transmitted through a duraline crystal, the wave of light is able to emit only those vibrations that are parallel to the axis of the crystal, the remaining vibrations are stopped by the crystal, thus leaving the crystal The vibrations of the electric vector in the wave are not only in all directions but also in the same direction perpendicular to the plane perpendicular to the direction of movement of the wave. Such light is called plane polarized light and this phenomenon is called polarization of light

प्रकाश का ध्रुवण
जब कोई प्रकाश की तरंग की किसी दुरमैलीन क्रिस्टल में से पारगमित होती है तो प्रकाश की तरंग केवल वही कम्पन बाहर निकाल पाते हैं जो क्रिस्टल की अक्ष के समांतर होते हैं शेष कंपन क्रिस्टल द्वारा रोक दिए जाते हैं इस प्रकार क्रिस्टल से निकलने के पश्चात प्रकाश की तरंग में विद्युत वेक्टर के कंपन तरंग के चलने की दिशा के लंबवत तल में सभी दिशाओं में समान रूप से न होकर केवल एक ही दिशा में होते हैं ऐसे प्रकाश को समतल ध्रुवित प्रकाश तथा इस घटना को प्रकाश का ध्रुवण कहते हैं।
