According to  Hygens theory, light moves in the form of waves. These waves move from the light source at the speed of light in all possible directions. By the time of Hygens, the scientists believed that the medium is necessary for the transmission of waves, so Hygens created a universal medium ether. And assumed that ether is almost weightless, that is, its density is very low and its elasticity is very high, because it is light, it can enter every substance and due to high elasticity, light waves in ether with very high velocity. When these light waves reflect from an object and fall on the retina of our eye, then that object starts to appear to us.

इस सिद्धांत के अनुसार प्रकाश तरंगो के रूप में चलता है ये तरंगे प्रकाश स्रोत से निकलकर सभी संभव दिशाओं प्रकाश के वेग से चलती है हाइगेंस के समय तक वैज्ञानिको की धारणा थी कि तरंगो के संचारण के लिए माध्यम आवश्यक है अतः हाइगेंस ने एक सर्वव्यापी मध्यम ईथर की कल्पना की और यह माना की ईथर लगभग भारहीन है अर्थात इसका घनत्व बहुत ही कम है तथा इसकी प्रत्यास्थता बहुत अधिक है हल्का होने के कारण यह प्रत्येक पदार्थ में प्रवेश कर सकता है तथा प्रत्यास्थता अधिक होने के कारण प्रकाश तरंगें ईथर में बहुत अधिक वेग से चलती है जब यह प्रकाश तरंगें किसी वस्तु से परावर्तित होकर हमारी आंख के रेटिना पर गिरते हैं तो वह वस्तु हमें दिखाई देने लगती है।
