Hygens proposed a theory to explain the transmission of waves in a medium, which Hygens called the theory of secondary wavelets, for this Hygens made the following hypothesis that ...

1. When waves emanate from a wave source located in a medium, the particles of the medium around the wave source start vibrating. The surface in which all the particles located in the medium vibrate in the art is called the waveform. If the wave source is point then the wavelength is spherical. It happens that the waveform is flat at a great distance from the wave source.

2.Each particle of the medium located on the waveform acts as a new wave source from which new waves emanate in all directions. These new waves are called secondary waves. Secondary waves in the medium move at the same speed as the primary waves.

3. If at any moment, the secondary waveforms, ie the surface touching them, are drawn, then this zone displays the new position of the waveform at that moment.

हाइगेन्स ने  किसी माध्यम में तरंगों के संचरण की व्याख्या करने के लिए एक सिद्धांत प्रतिपादित किया जिसे हाइगेंस का द्वितीयक तरंगिकाओं का सिद्धांत कहते हैं इसके लिए हाइगेन्स ने निम्नलिखित परिकल्पनाऐ कि... 

1.जब किसी माध्यम में स्थित तरंग स्रोत से तरंगे निकलती है तो तरंग स्रोत के चारों ओर स्थित माध्यम के कण कंपन करने लगते हैं माध्यम में वह पृष्ठ जिसमें स्थित सभी कण सामान कला में कंपन करते हैं तरंगाग्र कहलाता है यदि तरंग स्रोत बिन्दुवत  है तो तरंगाग्र गोलीय होता है तरंग स्रोत से बहुत अधिक दूरी पर तरंगाग्र समतल हो जाता है। 

2.तरंगाग्र पर स्थित माध्यम का प्रत्येक कण एक नए तरंग स्रोत का कार्य करता है जिससे सभी दिशाओं में नई तरंगे निकलती है इन नई तरंगों को द्वितीयक तरंगिकाये कहते हैं माध्यम में द्वितीयक तरंगिकाये उसी चाल से आगे बढ़ती है जिस चाल से प्राथमिक तरंगे आगे बढ़ती हैं। 

3. यदि किसी क्षण  द्वितीयक तरंगिकाओ का अन्वालोप अर्थात उनको स्पर्श करता हुआ पृष्ठ खींचे तो यह अन्वालोप उस क्षण तरंगाग्र की नई स्थिति प्रदर्शित करता है।
