On September 5, 1986, Pan Am Flight 73, traveling from Mumbai to New York City, was hijacked by four armed terrorists at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan. Neerja, as the senior flight purser, displayed extraordinary courage and presence of mind during the ordeal.

Despite facing grave danger, Neerja helped hide the passports of American passengers to protect them from the terrorists.
