Biography of Leander Paes 


Leander Paes is a professional tennis player in India who now competes in doubles and mixed doubles events. He is one of the most successful players of India. They win many doubles and mixed doubles events. He was given the highest award in the sports world of India in the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award 1996-1997 and also in the Padma Shri Award in 2001. In 2014, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan.

In addition to the matches, he won many memorable wins for India in the Davis Cup tennis tournament and won a bronze medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Leander Paes is one of the most successful players in the male doubles and mixed doubles. He was born in Goa and grew up in Calcutta. His mother, Jennifer Paes, was captain of the Indian Basketball team in 1980, and his father was Dr. Midfielder of Agusto Pace Hockey and was a member of the Indian team at the Munich Olympics in 1972, who won a bronze medal.

Her schooling was from Madras Christian College, Higher Secondary School. Her residence is Calendota in India and Orlando in Florida of America. He is a straight-handed player.

Leander had started learning tennis at the age of 7 and the basic information of the game started with the South Club, Calcutta.

In 1985, he started training at the Britishers Tennis Academy in Madras, and his coaching was Dabo-O-Miura. Pais gained international fame in 1990 when he won the Wimbledon Junior title and became the number one player in the Junior World Rankings.

Prior to that, she won the Rice Bowl Championship in less than 14 years in Hong Kong in 1987. After 2 years, they also won the competition under the age of 16. He also won the Junior and Senior National Champion title.

When the world's top-player Davis shakes the nose in the name of the cup, Leander showed how proud it was to play for his country. He is known as the Doubles Player of the Circuit.

After getting the title of ITF Junior, they got admission in the Indian Davis Cup, which also showed them a good game. In 1990, he defeated Marcos Ondshka of Africa 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to win the title. Although, in the senior category competition, they were performing best in Davis Cup matches but the pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the Grand Slam title and secured number one status in the world. Paes and Bhupathi started playing together in 1995. Not only did the ATP title win in 1997, but it reached the world's fourth position.

In 1998, he won the title of doubles, Italy and Shanghai doubles events and reached the 3 Grand Slam Australian, American and French semi-finals. In Wimbledon in 1997, they had to face defeat in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, their couple had separated for some time due to mutual differences, but still they started playing again by deflecting their differences for the country. Even today, Paes and Bhupati are playing the country's name in the mix doubles competition.

Paes became the second player to win an Olympic medal for India by winning a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Following this win, Leander Paes made his career as a pair with Mahesh Bhupathi. Paes-Bhupathi pair proved to be a huge achievement for India. Paes-Bhupathi jointly wins in many important matches outside of India and India.

Leander Paes has been honored with the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1996 and the Padma Shri award in 2001 for his contributions to tennis.

Economic achievements


On winning many titles he received a huge amount of money award. Since the title Paes and Mahesh won in doubles, the prize money has also been received jointly by both. They received the sum of one million 86 thousand 420 pounds sterling money when they won the Wimbledon couple title. Additionally, Leander received the amount of 79,180 pound sterling on winning the mixed doubles title with Lisa Raymond. Paes and Bhupathi received a total of $ 2.8 million in the French Open doubles title. The year before the grand slam tournament reached the final of the Australian Open, both received approximately 55 million dollars.

Thus alone, Leander Paes received an amount of about Rs. 16 million in the three Grand Slam tournaments of 1999. By 1996 the total earnings of this pair were less than half a million dollars, but between 1997 and 1999, both earned approximately $ 2.5 million.

Leander Paes and Mahesh pair also made good earnings from advertisements. Pepsi, Adidas, I.T.C. Companies like, gave good support because of their good performance in their Grand Slams. Then they got good earnings from the Siyaram group's modeling.

In 2004, pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi in Toronto (Canada) got $ 2.5 million ATT. Won the doubles title in the Tennis Master Series. Paes-Bhupathi won this 23rd title together.
