Palakkad Fort

Palakkad Fort, also known as Tipu Fort, is located in the small district of Kerala and is one of Kerala's best preserved forts. The fort is a sign of Tipu Sultan's courage and valor, so it is called Tipu's Fort.
According to the historian's record, it is believed that the King of Palakkad King was actually the assistant of Zamorin.

During the beginning of the 18th century, he separated himself from Zamorin and became independent. Although Zamorae attacked them and he came to Tipu Sultan's father, Hyder Ali, seeking some help.

Seeing the opportunity Haider Ali confiscated to acquire ownership of a strategically important location, and this fort was renovated in 1766 by Haider Ali.

In 1784, after the eleven days of the Seizure, the fort was captured by the British under Colonel Fullerton. Later the troops of Kozhikode Zamorine captured the fort, but in 1790, the British retrieved it. They again rebuilt the fort.

Tipu Sultan lost his life in an encounter with the British in 1799 and later came to be known on his name.

The fort is built in a square shape. The majestic fort has a huge wall and fortress all around. During the initial period, the entrance of the fort was through the bridge, which was later changed, later it was made in permanent form.

The temple of Lord Hanuman is also built in the dedication of Hanuman which is found inside the fort and with it there is an open air auditorium called a sub-jail and a pillar of the martyr.

Attraction of Palakkad Fort

The magnificent structure of the Palakkad Fort is one of those symbols that talks about the many wars between the Indian rulers and the British. There is a temple in the fort complex which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

Inside the fort complex there is an open air auditorium 'Rappadi', a martyr's pillar and a sub-jail.

Palakkad has other attractions which are worth a visit. These include Jain Temple, Kalpathi Temple, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, Dhoni Falls and Kanjipraj.

Road Trip: Once you reach Palakkad, you can take an auto in the fort.

Railway Travel: Palakkad Fort is located very close to Palakkad railway station.

Air Travel: Coimbatore is approximately 55 km in the state of Tamil Nadu. Cochin International Airport is about 140 km.
