Kalinjar Fort

Kalinger is the fort of Bundelkhand region of central India. Kalinjar is located in Banda of Uttar Pradesh state of India, the city is located near the world heritage site and the city of temples Khajuraho.

In 1023 Mahmud Ghazni invaded the fort. Babur was the only commander of Mughal attack in history, who captured the fort in 1526. It is also the same place where Sher Shah Suri died in 1545.

In 1812 the British army invaded Bundelkhand. Finally, in the long lasting war, the British took possession of the fort.

When the British captured Kalinjar, all rights from the fort were handed over to the new British authorities, who had damaged the fort. But today we can see the fort and the fort is kept open for tourists.

The legends say that after the churning, Hindu Lord Shiva had poisoned his poison and after drinking it his throat was blue. That is why they are also known as Nilkanth.
