Gyani Zail Singh (5 May 1916 – 25 December 1994) was an Indian politician who served as the seventh President of India, from 1982 to 1987. He was born in a Sikh family in Sandhwan, Punjab, which is now in Pakistan.

After serving as the Chief Minister, Zail Singh held several ministerial positions at the union level, including the Minister of Home Affairs. In 1982, he was elected as the President of India, succeeding Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. During his term as President, he faced a challenging political landscape, including the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
