Major lakes of India:

India is home to several major lakes, both natural and artificial, spread across the country.

Natural Lakes:

1. Wular Lake: Located in Jammu and Kashmir, Wular Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. It plays a vital role in the region's hydroelectric power generation and fisheries.

2. Dal Lake: Situated in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, Dal Lake is famous for its scenic beauty and houseboat settlements. It is a significant tourist attraction in the region.

3. Vembanad Lake: As previously mentioned, Vembanad Lake is the largest lake in Kerala and an essential part of the state's backwater tourism.

4. Chilika Lake: Located in Odisha, Chilika Lake is the largest coastal lagoon in India and a vital habitat for migratory birds. It is also a hotspot for biodiversity and eco-tourism.

5. Loktak Lake: Situated in Manipur, Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. It is known for the unique floating phumdis (heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matter at various stages of decomposition) and the endangered Sangai deer.

6. Pangong Lake: Spread across India and China (Tibet), Pangong Lake is situated in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. It is famous for its changing colors and breathtaking landscapes.

7. Pushkar Lake: Located in Rajasthan, Pushkar Lake is a sacred lake in Hinduism and an important pilgrimage site. The town of Pushkar is known for its temples and the annual Pushkar Camel Fair.

Artificial Lakes:

1. Hussain Sagar: Situated in Hyderabad, Telangana, Hussain Sagar is a large artificial lake built during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah. It is a significant water body and a popular tourist spot.

2. Renuka Lake: Located in Himachal Pradesh, Renuka Lake is the largest lake in the state and holds religious significance. It is shaped like a reclining woman and is associated with the legend of Renuka and her son Parashurama.

3. Dhebar Lake (Lake Jaisamand): Situated in Rajasthan, Dhebar Lake is the second-largest artificial lake in Asia. It was created in the 17th century by Maharana Jai Singh and is known for its scenic beauty.

4. Pong Dam Lake: Located in Himachal Pradesh, Pong Dam Lake, also known as Maharana Pratap Sagar, is an artificial reservoir on the Beas River. It is a significant wildlife habitat and a popular bird-watching destination.

5. Bhimtal Lake: Situated in Uttarakhand, Bhimtal Lake is a picturesque lake named after Bhima, a character in the Indian epic Mahabharata. It is surrounded by hills and offers a serene environment for tourists.
