Mohammad Shahid (born 14 April 1960, died 20 July 2016) is a former Indian hockey player. Shahid, who made a great contribution to Indian hockey over the years, said goodbye to this world on 20 July 2016. Shahid is one of the best hockey players to have played for India till date. He is particularly known for his dribbling skills. He was part of the Indian team during the 1980 Olympics in Russia. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1980 and the Padma Shri in 1986.
Mohammad Shahid was born on 14 April 960 in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh. Shahid, who started playing hockey at an early age, soon became recognized as a good player due to his hockey talent.
At the age of 19, he was selected for the junior Indian hockey team. This team reached the Junior World Cup in France. In less than a year, he made it to the senior hockey national team. This team reached Kuala Lumpur to participate in Hockey tournament, Champions Trophy tournament, Karachi tournament.
Although the Indian team did not perform well in Karachi, Shahid was adjudged the best player of all time. In the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the Indian team brought the gold medal of hockey.
Mohammad Shahid also played in the 1981-82 World Cup hockey tournament in Mumbai. Where the Indian team reached the fifth place. He then played in Karachi's Champions Trophy in 1983 and 1984. He also played in the World Hockey Tournament held in Perth, Australia.
Shahid played for Team India in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and also became a part of the 1988 Olympics but India could not win any medal. Shahid played for the team in the 1982 Delhi Asian Games. Team could win silver medal in these games. The team won the bronze medal at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games.
Seeing his tremendous performance in the Asian Games in Seoul, he was selected for the Asian All Star Hockey Team. Mohammad Shahid was considered the best dribbler in hockey. He used to work as a Welfare Inspector in the Indian Railways. He represented the Railways team in the National Hockey Championship.
Mohammad Shahid was the captain of Indian hockey in 1985-86. He has been awarded the Arjuna Award by the Government of India. In 1986, the Government of India also honored him with the Padma Shri.
