Biography of Lucy Oman


Early life of Lucy Oman:

Lucy Oman M was an Indian gynecologist. He was the first medical director of Indian origin at St. Stephen's Hospital in Delhi. Lucy Oman was born in the year 1919 in Kerala. PK Oommen was his father and mother's name was Enamma. Alishan Oman was his sister's name and privately his brother's name.

PK Oman was a teacher in Kochappi Model School. Dr. Lucy Oman Kijakvedu was unmarried. Dr. Lucy Oommen had graduated from Pallar Medical College and not only that but she was the gold medalist of the year. Dr. Lucy Oommen has also been the personal physician of the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Work of Lucy Oman :

 Dr. Lucy Oman worked as a surgeon at St. Stephen's Hospital in Delhi in 1942, and a few days later he took over from Dr. Morris as the first Indian Medical Superintendent of the hospital. Following the work done by Dr. Lucy, St. Stephen's received a development as if from the Maternity Hospital, which had 140 beds for the usual 450 beds. Dr. Lucy Oman also formed an organization called Patient's Welfare Society. Free patients were supported by the group of this institution.

Awards and Honors of Lucy Oman:

1) In the year 1977, Dr. Oman was awarded the Paghashree in recognition of his dedicated and selfless service to the hospital and the community at the Directing Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
2) St. Stephen's Hospital instituted an award in 2005 to recognize excellence in mother and child care, which was named Dr. Lucy Oman Award.
3) After the death of Dr. Lucy Oman, the Father of the Nation of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam renamed the Mother and Child Block as Dr Lucy Oman Mother and Child Block.
4) Dr. Lucy Oman died in March 2002.
