The reason for this defect is the refractive index of the material of a lens is different for the light of different colors, so that the focus distance of the lens also varies for different colors.

स्वेत प्रकाश द्वारा प्रकाशित किसी वस्तु का लेंस द्वारा बना प्रतिबिंब प्रायः रंगीन एवं अस्पष्ट होता है लेंस द्वारा उत्पन्न प्रतिबिंब के इस दोष को वर्ड विपथन करते हैं। इस दोष का कारण किसी लेंस के पदार्थ के अपवर्तनांक का भिन्न-भिन्न रंगों के प्रकाश के लिए भिन्न-भिन्न होना है जिससे लेंस की फोकस दूरी भी भिन्न-भिन्न रंगों के लिए भिन्न-भिन्न होती है।
