Govardhan Puja | Legend and Significance - Regional Variations - Puja and Aarti - Govardhan Parikrama - Cow Worship - Key Traditions and Customs of Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja:

Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut Puja, is a Hindu festival celebrated on the fourth day of Diwali, the festival of lights. It typically falls on the first lunar day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the Hindu month of Kartika. Govardhan Puja is primarily observed in North India, especially in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan.

Legend and Significance - Regional Variations - Puja and Aarti - Govardhan Parikrama - Cow Worship - Key Traditions and Customs of Govardhan Puja

Legend and Significance:

The festival has its roots in Hindu mythology and is associated with the legend of Lord Krishna. According to the legend:

In the village of Gokul, people used to worship Lord Indra, the god of rain, and offer elaborate sacrifices to seek his blessings for bountiful harvests. However, Lord Krishna advised the villagers to worship Govardhan Parvat (mountain) instead, emphasizing the importance of nature over grand rituals.

In defiance of Lord Indra's wrath, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Parvat on his little finger to provide shelter to the villagers from the torrential rains. This act symbolizes the importance of environmental conservation and living in harmony with nature.

In commemoration of this event, people celebrate Govardhan Puja by creating a representation of the Govardhan Parvat using various food items. This representation is known as "Annakut," which means a mountain of food.

Key Traditions and Customs:

1. Annakut Preparation:

Devotees prepare a variety of food items, sweets, and dishes to create a mountain-like structure (Annakut). The food offerings symbolize the Govardhan Parvat.

2. Puja and Aarti:

The Annakut is arranged in the form of a mountain, and a puja (ritual worship) is performed. Devotees offer prayers, sing bhajans (devotional songs), and perform aarti to seek the blessings of Lord Krishna.

3. Govardhan Parikrama:

Some devotees undertake the Govardhan Parikrama, a circumambulation (circular walk) around the Govardhan Parvat. This pilgrimage is considered auspicious on Govardhan Puja.

4. Distribution of Prasad:

After the puja, the Annakut is distributed as prasad (blessed food) among the devotees. It is believed that partaking in this prasad brings blessings and prosperity.

5. Cow Worship:

Cows hold a sacred significance in Hinduism, and on Govardhan Puja, special worship is offered to cows. Cows are decorated, fed, and honored as a symbol of Lord Krishna's association with them.

Regional Variations:

While Govardhan Puja is widely celebrated in North India, there may be regional variations in customs and traditions. In some places, people also create small hillocks of cow dung to represent the Govardhan Parvat.

Govardhan Puja emphasizes the importance of environmental consciousness, simplicity, and gratitude towards nature. It is a festival that encourages people to appreciate the abundance provided by the earth and to live in harmony with the environment.
