Ahmedabad - the story of an emerging city

A city in the state of Gujarat that has always been contradictory, where on the one hand, Gujarati people are known as Master Businessmen all over the world, in this city itself, Gandhiji taught the lesson of Satyagraha and Non-violence. On one side is the materialistic outlook and on the other side is the spirituality of self-sacrifice. Ahmedabad, with many variations, represents Indian culture well and is the seventh largest metropolis in India. Ahmedabad is considered to be one of the fastest growing cities in India.

Ahmedabad background story 

Ahmedabad is the financial capital of Gujarat. It is 32 km to the north of Gandhinagar. Located on the banks of the Sabarmati River. Ahmedabad was formerly known as Karnavati, because its ruler was named Solanki King Karnadeva I in that period. But later this city was attacked and captured by Sultan Ahmed Shah, since then it was named Ahmedabad and now people know it as Ahmedabad.

The earlier image of Ahmedabad was Mahmud Begada, grandson of Sultan Ahmed, 10 km to strengthen the security of the city. A wall was built in the periphery of it, with a total of 12 doors, 189 bastions and 6000 battalions. All these 12 doors have amazing carvings and calligraphy. All these gates also have a balcony. During the Mughal reign, Ahmedabad was won by Emperor Akbar but the Mughals left their mark in Shah Jahan. Moti Shahi Mahal of Shahi Bagh was sponsored by him.

Gandhi's influence in the city

During the British rule, the city gained considerable prominence from the Indian independence movement run by Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji established two ashrams here - Satyagraha Ashram known as Sabarmati Ashram which is situated on the banks of Sabarmati River and Kochrab Ashram, Ahmedabad. Gandhiji started the Salt Satyagraha movement by starting the Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. Under British rule, it was called the "Manchester of the East" and after Gandhiji's Swadeshi movement, the textile industry of this place grew considerably. At that time, Arvind Mills, Calico Mills also came into existence and produced a large amount of cloth, which was famous for its indigenous production.

Ahmedabad city is a place that has many historical monuments, no shortage of modern attractions, large malls and movie halls, Hatthiasing Jain Temple, Sidi Sayyid Mosque, Swami Narayan Temple, Jama Masjid, Mahudi Jain Temple, Akshardham Temple , City Walls and The Gates, Rani no Hajiro, Jhoolta Minara, Sarkhej Roja, Dada Hari Vav, Adalaj terraced well etc. are the major attractions here. The climate of Ahmedabad is a hot semi-arid climate and it is a region requiring little rainfall, amidst the desert and humid climate. The city has mainly three seasons: summer, monsoon and winter. Apart from the monsoon season, the climate is very dry. The month of January is cool due to the north winds.

Culture and Festivals of Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is a state of diverse cultural and religious communities where a vibrant cultural tradition is still seen. The festival of Navratri is celebrated here for nine days with great pomp. During Navaratri, Garba dance is performed here. Festivals like Deepawali, Holi, Ganesh Chaturthi, Gudi Padwa, Eid-ul-Fitr, Muharram and Crisam are also celebrated here.

How to reach Ahmedabad?

Within the city, auto rickshaw and bus facilities are well available for commuting. The local bus service is run within the city by the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS). The main railway station of the city is located in the Kalupur area, which is known as Ahmedabad Railway Station or Kalupur Railway Station. Other stations in Ahmedabad are Maninagar, Watwa, Gandhigram, Asarwa, Chandlodia, Kali Gum, Vastrapur, Sabarmati, Sarkhej, Naroda and Amali. Airport of Ahmedabad is Sardar Ballabhbhai Patel International Airport which is 15 km from the city. The railway station is located at a distance of 8 km from the airport. Is situated at this distance. Bus stands provide facilities for domestic and international tourists.
