Ravi Shankar Prasad was born on August 30, 1954, in Patna, Bihar, India. He comes from a family with a background in law, and his father, Thakur Prasad, was a Senior Advocate at the Patna High Court. Ravi Shankar Prasad himself holds a Bachelor's degree in Arts and a Master's degree in Political Science from Patna University. He also holds a Law degree from the Patna Law College.

Before entering politics, Ravi Shankar Prasad had a successful legal career as a practicing lawyer. He was designated as a Senior Advocate at the Patna High Court.
