P. Sathasivam was born into an agricultural family in Tamil Nadu.
He completed his Bachelor's degree in Botany from Loyola College, Chennai, and later pursued a law degree from Madras Law College.

Sathasivam enrolled as an advocate in July 1973 and started practicing law in the Madras High Court.
